In Weddings

So the big day is finally here, and you’ve got everything planned.

From ceremony to reception to party, everything is ready. The food is prepared, transport is organised, make-up is looking great, the guests are all waiting… but it’s never that simple is it?

The thing about unexpected problems is… well, they’re unexpected. You don’t know what (if anything) is going to go wrong, but you can be prepared in case something does.

We’ve put together some of the most common wedding day problems, and what you can do to avoid/fix them.

Damage to your wedding dress

Every bride’s worse nightmare is something happening to her wedding dress.

Whether it’s a clumsy guest spilling wine on it, or catching it on a nail as you walk by, there’s nothing that will make a bride burst into tears quicker.

But it’s not the end of the world!

If it is a spilled drink, common stain removal wipes will do a remarkably good job. And remember, the faster you attend to the spill, the more likely you’ll get everything out completely.

Another nightmare situation is getting out of the car and ripping your dress just before walking into the church. Granted, this is a worse-case scenario, but it’s best to plan for these things.

A small roll of fabric tape will conceal any rip or tear if there’s no time to sew it up, and failing that, your wedding photographer should have some gaffer or masking tape in their kit.

Just remember, a small rip in the dress is practically unnoticeable, and won’t show up in photos, so there’s no need to let it ruin your day.

The most common wedding day problems and their solutions

The weather

Ok, this is one we can’t do anything about. If it’s going to rain, it’s going to rain.

What you can do though is prepare for it.

Bad weather isn’t just an annoyance, it can affect everything from the wedding dress, an outdoor ceremony or reception, and the wedding photos.

The most obvious answer is to have plenty of umbrellas ready.

Umbrellas are incredibly useful at weddings, and not only help keep outfits dry and hair in place, but they also make a surprisingly good prop for wedding photographs.

If you plan ahead well enough, you can have colour-co-ordinated umbrellas to match your bridesmaids dresses, or clear ones so they are hardly noticeable in the photos.

Sore feet

You wedding shoes may look amazing, especially with your dress, but have you actually worn them before today? If not, then we can guarantee your feet will be killing you – and that’s just by the end of the ceremony.

If you want to be able to walk and dance the night away, then a comfortable pair of shoes is essential.

It doesn’t even have to be a matching pair… no one is going to see them under your wedding dress, so if you have an old pair of trainers you love wearing around the house, go for it!

Being comfortable and pain-free is essential on your wedding day, especially if you’re going to be on your feet for 12 hours meeting and greeting guests.

Running late

Have you ever been to a wedding where the Bride turns up on time?

Even the best planned wedding can run behind schedule. The Bride’s make-up may take longer than expected, or the photographer might be a perfectionist. Even the most basic thing like getting stuck in traffic might put everything back by half an hour.

Whatever the reason, it’s quite common for things to fall behind slightly.

The easiest solution to this is to include those lost minutes in your initial planning. If it takes fifteen minutes to get from ceremony to reception, give it an hour. Everyone will be happy chatting and taking photos. Then people decide who’s getting a lift with who… all this takes time, but if you plan for it, you don’t have to worry.

Drunk guests

Did someone say free bar?

For some people, weddings are the only socialising they’ll do all year. They may want to let their hair down, have a drink and enjoy themselves.

The problem comes when they have too much to drink. Don’t forget, it’s a long day, and having a glass of champagne every time someone toasts the happy couple soon adds up, especially for those who don’t regularly consume alcohol.

If a guest (or guests) becomes too rowdy, then a common-sense approach needs to be taken. Have someone you trust take them outside for a breath of fresh air, and gently remind them that they’re being a bit too rambunctious.

Telling them they’re drunk and making a fool of themselves won’t go down well, and probably lead to more trouble. Likewise, have a word with the barstaff and they can stop serving them drinks if necessary.

Have an “emergency bag” with you

To try and cover all bases, it’s a good idea to have a “be-prepared” kit – a small bag a bridesmaid or groomsman can be in charge of.

Inside should be small essentials that can help with wedding-day emergencies.

Stain-removal wipes and a small sewing kit in case of a wedding dress accident, and pain-killers for that inevitable headache which could arrive at some point.

Scissors and superglue are always handy when something breaks or needs cutting (high-heels for example), and breath mints are great to have for all the hugs and kisses from guests – not to mention your first kiss.

And of course, tissues for all the crying you do on the happiest day of your life!
