Key Considerations when Decorating & Styling your Auckland Wedding Ceremony

Your ceremony, the most crucial moment of your wedding day,  is the reason for the wedding season. You’ll celebrate during your reception, hear heartfelt speeches from close friends and family, and enjoy delicious food with your guests; however, it all begins with your wedding ceremony.

It's such an important moment, both for your wedding day and your life together, that it’s vital to decorate and elevate the location you choose for your ceremony. No matter how beautiful the area is, there’s always an opportunity to customise and personalise your ceremony space. Taking a considered approach to enhancing the location while embracing the existing backdrop can be challenging; however, there are a few key ways to effortlessly decorate and elevate your wedding ceremony.

The Wedding Aisle

The wedding aisle is where you or your partner will take those final steps as an unmarried person, walking toward your partner and your new life together. Such a critical moment deserves an aisle that feels just as special, and there are many ways to decorate it beautifully.

When planning your wedding aisle there are 2 key points of styling and decoration; this being the ground itself and the aisles outline. When considering the actual aisle itself, there are a few different approaches to add your own personal style to the ceremony location.

  • Carpeted aisle, which is particularly effective for indoor wedding ceremonies

  • Flower petals can add a nice pop of colour which ties into your weddings colour palette - This can be achieved through having a flower girl.

  • Mirrored aisle, creating amazing photo opportunities through your ceremony that your photographer will love.

For lining the aisle, this is where the real fun begins, as there's so many ways to create a unique aisle while tying it all back to your wedding aesthetic. There are a number of different ways to go about achieving this effectively.

  • Shepard hooks

  • Florals

  • Candles

  • Greenery

  • Lanterns

  • Cane Hearts

With these decorations, you can either place them on the floor either side of the aisle, hang them from the chairs on the aisle, or from Shepard's hooks. At Markovina Estate, we have many of these decorations available for our couples to use on their wedding day to help bring their ceremony to life.

The Ceremony Backdrop

The backdrop is where you’ll stand to make your lifelong commitment. While your venue may already offer stunning ceremony locations, there are simple ways to enhance its existing beauty and reflect your personality and theme.

For example, at The Barrel Waterfall at Markovina Estate, two stands are perfectly placed for large, extravagant floral arrangements. These can tie back into your overall theming and be repurposed elsewhere in your wedding after the ceremony, making them both beautiful and budget-friendly.

Another timeless option is a wedding arch, which works wonderfully for rustic wedding themes. Arches can be left simple or adorned with lush floral arrangements. Their versatility allows you to make them uniquely yours, incorporating details that capture the energy and aesthetic you want to bring into married life.

Cultural Setups

Many cultures include specific elements as part of their religious or cultural wedding traditions. For example, a Mandap is often used in Hindu weddings as the focal point for key parts of the ceremony. This becomes the centrepiece of the celebration, and decorating the ceremony area frequently ties closely to the vibrant colours and intricate details of the Mandap itself.

By incorporating these cultural elements, you can create a cohesive ceremony space that celebrates your heritage and faith, which will shine beautifully in both your ceremony and your wedding photography.

Hanging Decorations

Another way to bring your ceremony space to life is by making use of the wider setting. For instance, hanging decorations from the tree's branches on the chestnut tree at Markovina Estate is a perfect way to tie the natural garden setting into your wedding theme. Or alternatively hanging flowers over the fireplace. Using colours and décor that echo other parts of your celebration helps create a consistent design vision that will be reflected beautifully in your wedding photos for years to come.
