Your wedding day is the perfect opportunity to bring family and friends together to witness the moment you and your partner make a lifelong commitment. However, many of us have important people who shaped our journeys but have sadly passed away before they could share this moment with us. These loved ones deserve to be included in your day in a way that feels meaningful. Whether you prefer a subtle nod or a more personal tribute woven into the celebration, here are some thoughtful ways to honour absent loved ones at your wedding.
Subtle Tributes
There are many gentle ways to acknowledge loved ones who have passed, especially those who played a significant role in your life or within your family. There are many different ways meaningfully acknowledge them.
Leaving an empty chair and a place name for them
Light a Candle
Dedicate a reading to them
Hold a moment of silence
Another approach is to set up a small table with framed photos of your late family members. This allows you and your guests to pause throughout the evening and remember them, keeping them close in spirit as you celebrate such an important milestone. It offers a quiet moment of connection while highlighting the special place they still hold within the family.
Shared Memories
You may prefer to honour them by sharing memories during the day. Mentioning them in speeches and reflecting on a treasured moment can keep their memory alive and may spark further conversations among guests who also knew and loved them.
Having a wedding video is another excellent way to include those who have passed. Not only does it capture the important moments of your relationship, but it can also feature special clips or photos that represent the time you shared with them.
Symbolic Gestures
Symbolic gestures are a more private and personal way of acknowledging loved ones. For example, you might wear a family heirloom that holds deep sentimental value. Carrying this with you throughout the day can feel like having them right by your side.
You could also choose a meaningful song for your formalities or incorporate decor elements and theming that remind you of them. Whatever you choose, the most important thing is that it feels genuine to your story and keeps them close to your heart.
The Markovina family’s Tribute
Before becoming one of Auckland's top wedding venues, Markovina Estate was a fully operational vineyard, run by the late Ivan Markovina until he fell ill and eventually passed away. Many years after his passing, the family discovered an old barrel still containing some of the port he had made. This small amount was bottled and treasured. Two of Ivan’s grandsons recently celebrated their 21st birthdays and, while these occasions were not weddings, they chose to honour his memory by sharing a glass of his port. It was a powerful reminder that loved ones can be present in spirit, even decades after their passing.
Personalise It to You
Like the Markovina port, the most meaningful tributes are those that feel personal and authentic to your story. Every loved one leaves behind memories, traditions, and small details that can be woven into your wedding day in a way that feels right for you. Talk with your family, reflect on your shared experiences, and choose something that truly represents the connection you had.
If you have any questions or would like support in planning your tribute, the Markovina team is always here to help. Our Kumeu wedding venue is dedicated to helping you create a wedding day that reflects your story, your love, and the people who helped shape your journey.
