The History of Gay Marriage in NZ
New Zealand was the 15th country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, 12 years after the Netherlands pioneered the marriage equality change. Before New Zealand’s legalisation, same-sex civil unions were legal from 2004, which granted several of the rights and obligations of marriage. It wasn’t until 9 years later, when the Marriage Amendment Act was introduced to Parliament, that it was eventually passed, making same-sex marriage legal from 9 December 2017.
